LGBTQ+ & Third Gender Equality

सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म

"All of this is Brahman — every living being and every identity is a manifestation of the same universal consciousness."

— Chandogya Upanishad 3.14.1

Our Objective

Financial Independence Through Inclusion

Aasmita Association's core objective is to help transgender and LGBTQ+ individuals become financially independent — not through charity, but through genuine opportunity. We work to create pathways to education, vocational skill development, dignified employment and meaningful social inclusion.

We believe that every person — regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation — deserves to contribute their talents to society and live with dignity, security and respect.

Ancient Indian Heritage

Rooted in India's Timeless Traditions

India's ancient texts and epics reveal a nuanced, inclusive understanding of gender and identity that is part of our shared cultural heritage.

Ardhanarishvara

The sacred form of Ardhanarishvara — half Shiva, half Parvati — represents one of Hinduism's most profound philosophical statements about the nature of the divine.

This form teaches that Shiva (masculine consciousness) and Shakti (feminine energy) are not opposites but inseparable aspects of a single reality — suggesting that completeness transcends the binary. The divine itself is understood to encompass all expressions of gender.

The Ramayana & Kinnar Community

In the traditional narrative of the Ramayana, when Lord Rama departed for his fourteen-year exile, he addressed the assembled citizens of Ayodhya, asking all "men and women" to return home.

The kinnar community, belonging to neither category, remained at the forest's edge in devoted vigil for all fourteen years. When Rama returned, he was moved by their unwavering loyalty and blessed them with the power to bless others at life's most sacred moments — a tradition honoured to this day.

The Mahabharata — Shikhandi & Arjuna

Shikhandi stands in the Mahabharata as a figure of extraordinary courage — born female and living as a warrior — whose role in the Kurukshetra war was pivotal to the Pandavas' victory. Shikhandi's story affirms that purpose and courage are the measure of a person, not their assigned identity.

Arjuna's Brihannala form — when Arjuna lived as a dance teacher of indeterminate gender during the year of incognito exile — is celebrated in the epic as a demonstration of mastery, artistry and dignity. Both figures remind us that identity is multidimensional, and worth is never diminished by it.

Ancient Knowledge — Contextual Understanding

India's classical knowledge traditions are rich and multifaceted. Classical Ayurvedic texts historically discussed the concept of tritiya prakriti — different natural constitutions — reflecting a more fluid understanding of human nature than a strict binary.

These historical perspectives should be understood within their traditional cultural and philosophical context. We share them to highlight the depth and nuance of India's intellectual heritage, and not as medical guidance. We encourage all individuals to consult qualified healthcare professionals for their specific health needs.

Similarly, Jyotish (Vedic astrology) is referenced here as a traditional belief system with deep cultural significance in India. We acknowledge its importance in the lives of many without presenting astrological interpretations as scientific fact.
